The report on NaMoWriMo 2017 for the first week is “as expected”. The story has been “mostly” laid out.
Two surprises happened during this process.
- I thought of another book on the same subject.
- I discovered this book was a romance rather than whatever I thought it was going to be.
The Other Book
It’s always nice when serendipity comes to visit and this was a great present. It’s on the same general theme – Merlin and Magic – and the general concept/theme has been dropped into a new Scrivener project for development.
One of those writing mysteries is about how ideas flow – whether they’re always there in the ether waiting for an open mind or whether that open mind somehow conjures up the idea.
I’ve written about where I get my ideas here so when they arrive out of the blue like this one did, I can only be grateful to my muse.
The Current Project
Discovering this was a romance was a complete surprise to me. But it makes sense in the overall scheme of the project. In order for me to write a good romance, I need to take a step backwards and sort out the key components of what makes a “good” romance book. That’s a project for this coming week while I continue to flesh out the other story lines.
Also, the “project” is now a four-book series (at least) rather than a single book. I’m using the NaMoWriMo project as an excuse to get my butt in gear and as I said in an earlier post – if I make it great but if not… (who cares as long as I’m moving forward towards the stretch goal.)
My efficiency with the Dragon wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be but this book Fool Proof Dictation: A No-Nonsense System for Effective & Rewarding Dictation has already made a world of difference to how I’m working on things.
At the moment, I’m a hybrid but this coming week should see me make the switch and commitment to dictation. I believe dictation will be the key to hitting all my word counts this coming year so that’s where I’m headed. I’ll get back to you next week on how that went.
I’m moving forward with creating a solid foundation. So while other writers are bravely dropping words on paper, I’m on track with my plan to get the story lines down first and outline the project.
As I write this, it’s Nov 4 so technically I have another 3 days in week one. 🙂 So maybe…
