I thought I’d throw a few numbers at you just to illuminate a growing problem for small publishers.
- In 2014, my two websites served up 937,895 page views.
- In 2015, the same two websites – after some rewriting and tweaking – delivered 1,240,439 page views.
- An increase of approx 270,000 pages delivered to readers. Looking better he says with a grin.
This is a long way from the height (before hacking) when I’d serve more than 5 times this with seven websites but still, it’s somewhat respectable. And shows growth potential again.
- The number of adsense clicks in 2014: 18,166
- The number of adsense clicks in 2015: 22, 645
- 4500 extra clicks. I’m starting to sing a payraise-song here.
I’m looking at the number of clicks and starting to think I may be doing better this year.
But no. Turns out I made $1400. less this year from advertising than last year.
More traffic, more clicks but each click was worth less.
Hey Google, I held up my end of the bargain – made my websites better. You screwed up yours.
Work harder, work smarter, still make less money.
And that my fellow writers is why I’ve moved to a subscription service. if the websites can’t deliver on the income, you have to find another way.
It’s why I’ve written ebooks to sell on another income stream – with a few in the pipeline as I write.
Some of you may turn to membership sites, some to ebooks (a decent source if you publish regularly and well), some to Etsy or other sites that sell physical goods.
I know of some folks who’ve developed enough “other” income earning options they no longer have Adsense but instead focus on advertising their own products exclusively.
See where I’m going with this?
Develop your own products. Write your own ebooks. Produce your own images. Find markets that work automatically if possible. But launch as early and simple as possible to test, improve and figure it out. And improve and focus on those that work. Don’t put your online income eggs in one basket unless you own the basket.
Or, do it as a hobby, enjoy it and don’t give a damn about the money. Take that pressure off yourself and enjoy the sheer pleasure of creating.
Why I’m Not Giving You A Specific Thing To Do
There isn’t any single answer. Instead, the magic in the Net is there are a thousand different answers depending on the questions you have the bravery to ask.
There are multiple channels of publishing or income earning for any creative person now. They may not be easy, they may not work right away, they may take… well that’s a subject for another day isn’t it.
For now, simply understand you can’t put your income eggs into the Adsense basket and expect a consistent income.
