Over the years, I have reviewed many products on my blogs. So when the advertising agency for G.H. Cretors popcorn, contacted me about reviewing their products, I agreed to do it. While there are things I do not review, when somebody dangles one of my favourite foods in front of me, there was no choice involved. I simply had to review and taste this product.
It began badly. The box arrived on our ferry, I drove down, picked it up, returned, walked into the house and put it on the table. My better half just happen to be there when I slit the top open and pulled out a bag of popcorn. That was a mistake.
G.H. Cretors popcorn is known in our household. A look appeared in my better half’s eyes, so I quickly pulled out the second bag. I had some sense that there might be some negotiation involved in our immediate future.
“That’s the popcorn we get at Costco,” said my better half.
I looked more carefully at it, the bag I had in my left hand was the caramel– cheese combination. The bag I had in my right hand was the cheese–flavoured popcorn.
Let me be clear, I own anything that contains caramel. Or, at least I’d like to think I do. I tentatively held out the bag in my right hand, and she accepted the offering.
As a review, this post is going to be completely biased. Because when it comes to flavoured popcorn, I’m a massive fan of their caramel flavor.
In the interests of being objective in reviewing this popcorn, I decided that I would take my time eating the bag. Rather than inhaling the mix, I would slowly but surely consume it by the handful. Rather than stuffing my mouth so I couldn’t speak, I would nibble piece by piece and enjoy the contrasting flavors.
This was my plan, and for the most part, I was successful. Instead of the bag only lasting a few minutes before it was totally consumed, I stretched it out for at least an hour. At the end of that hour, I looked across at my better half with a gleam in my eye. She clutched her cheese flavoured popcorn tighter. She raised her eyebrow at me, and we began a stare off.
Quite objectively I pointed out it was my sworn duty to review and evaluate both bags. She wasn’t impressed. But, she gave me a small bowl for my review.
I stared longingly at her full bag of Just The Cheese popcorn, she clutched it even tighter to her chest, daring me to even try to pry it out of her arms.
I ate my small bowl, smiled at her fetchingly, and listened to her say, “Mine.”
I’m not sure that this is a kind of review that any ad agency would want. But you have to understand, when you send me this kind of popcorn, the normal rules no longer apply.
G.H. Cretors popcorn has to be restricted in its entry to our house because its lifespan is so short. I confess I don’t eat a bag of their popcorn, I inhale it.
While I inhale it, my better half hides it so I can’t find her share. We have a great game called “search for the popcorn.” You should not be surprised that I win most of the time. Put the caramel corn popcorn anywhere in our house, and I’ll find it.
I had also not visited their website. In the interests of doing a review, I discovered they had recipes for using their popcorn. Let me simply say the chocolate salted caramel popcorn recipe will become a featured addition to any get together with friends. Here’s the link to the recipe page.
But you’re on your own to resist this recipe and their popcorn. I confess I can’t.
